Amazing weather

What a superb day we had on Saturday, the weather couldn't have been better with light winds, warm and sunny. The sea looked amazing with turquoise colour showing well and it was littered with birds.

At Grutness we parked up near the pier and straight away a Long Tailed Duck- female came into view very close in.  It didn't seem to bother when I approached and just stayed put for several photos.

Out in the distance two Red Throated Divers fed close together, one in breeding plumage and the other in winter plumage (this one very white colour)

The tide was out exposing rocks which made it the perfect landing and resting spot for a tern, then magically a Common Tern came in and landed on the rocks. This was my first tern of the year although a few Arctic Terns have arrived in the last few days.

A few Sanderling ran ahead of the waves and a White Wagtail flew across and started to feed a short distance away from a group of Starling. A couple of Black Guillemot, Shag and GTBB gulls added to the variety. Curlew, Oystercatcher , Common Gull and Kittiwakes passed overhead.

Over at West Voe Gt Northern Diver (4) , Long Tailed Duck (28) Eider (22) Red Breasted Merganser (2) Mallard (2) , Turnstone (16) Pied Wagtail, Wheatear (4) and a few gulls.

Arriving at Scatness a Red Throated Diver showed well, with Tufted, Mallard, Teal, Moorhen. Further on numerous Wheatear showed , Skylark sang and several Blackbird played hide and seek behind the wall.

Onto the pools and Turnstone(12) Ringed Plover (2) Purple Sandpiper and Oystercatcher (4) gave good views

News of a Mega Bird coming soon on the next blog
